When you left something alonefree willor forcibly removed, a new beginning always requires a leap of faith. Yes, there's the thrill of new possibilities and the open road ahead, but there's also that free fall moment and thattemerthat somehow you don't land on your feet. Adapted from the song by Jerome Kern, here are some tips on what to do for yourself, such as "pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start over."
1. Manage your regrets.
We will all inevitably experience some regret in life; it's just part of human territory. Regret can drown you in sinking momentsto emphasizeOr, when processed, it can actually serve as a flotation device and help shape your decisions about the future. There is some debate as to whether, to paraphrase Robert Frost, people tend to regret the path or path they take.NOtaken more
As is well known, in an experiment Amos Twersky and Daniel Kahneman found that participants looked at the situation of two people who lost their potential to earn $1,200 under different circumstances, one by inactivity (not buying stocks) and the other by action (stocks of sales). Stocks Turned Valuable): 92% concluded that the person who took action by selling the stock would regret it more than the person who lost the money through inaction. But the work of Thomas Gilovic and Victoria Husted Medvec challenged that view, finding in surveys that more people regretted actions they didn't take.
Take stock of your regrets; if you have to, write them down so you can actually see them. Do they fall into the category of action or inaction? What can you learn about yourself and your future intentions by looking at your regrets?
A study by Colleen Saffrey and her colleagues showed that regret can be productively used to understand where you've been, to make decisions you will make, to support your future actions, and, of course, to make sure you don't. don't make the same mistakes again.
2. Deal with your rumination.
The saying about crying over spilled milk is true, but for many of us, breaking the merry-go-round of repetitive thoughts is difficult, if not impossible. Daniel Wegner's work on "white bears," the thoughts we try but cannot suppress, sheds light on the process by which the mind unconsciously seeks out the very thoughts we are trying.NOthink about.
It turns out that the more we try not to think, the more we think those thoughts. Rumination feeds off being alone, so a plan is to surround yourself with a few people you trust and talk through your concerns. Another Wegner suggestion is to give yourself "care time." It can be as long or short as you like, but only care about that amount of time. Consciously focusing on a concern may seem counterintuitive, but it can also help, as canMeditation.
3. Think of your new goal in abstract terms.
This strategy is offered by Charles Carver and Scheier in their classic book onself-regulationand it is, I think, brilliant in its simplicity. They write that "when one path is blocked, people should be able to jump to another". Thinking about your goal in abstract terms, moving from the details of the situation to a more nuanced and deeper understanding of your wants and needs, can help you move forward.
I adopt here an example given by Carver and Scheier. Let's say you start with the end or loss of a close relationship orMarried. While finding another partner or spouse may seem impossible right now, realizing that what you really want is the experience of intimacy that changes your outlook and opens up new possibilities for action. Likewise, if you are starting from scratch in the fieldcarrera, focusing on what you really want in the future (working in a supportive environment with lots of collegial contact or, alternatively, working independently and organizing your own work schedule) will help you clarify your desiresGoalsand facilitate the determination of the best strategy to reach them.
4. Put yourself in the right mindset.
If your thinking can be reduced to "full steam", you don't have enough nuance. Thinking about and planning goals requires one way of thinking, reaching the goal requires another, as Peter Gollwitzer's work has demonstrated.
The first way of thinking isponderingAnd it's open for you to evaluate your options and strategies and gather all the information you need to achieve your goal. At this point, you should network, get other opinions, and determine feasibility. The conscious mindset is primarily realistic. On the contrary, theimplementthe mindset is action-oriented;optimismis important at this stage, although it can cause you to overestimate your chances of success because you need optimism to keep going.
ButBy focusing, you can shift from one mindset to another depending on the circumstances. Here it is important to know not only what you think, but also how you think. Let's say your approach doesn't work despite your best efforts. This is a signal to get out of implementation mode and back into deliberative thinking so you can consider all of your options.
5. Motivate you.
Harness your energy by focusing on the things you've done that have brought you into what Mihaly Csikszentimihalyi has called "the flow." What is "river"? Can you remember a time when you were doing something and completely lost track of time in the process, feeling completely immersed in what you were doing and at the same time feeling a great sense of accomplishment and meaning? In short, it's a river.
Get creative as you start thinking about what you want to do next, and get an overview of the things you do to move forward. Flow can be achieved through many activities—gardening, knitting, writing, exercising, helping others, and just about anything else—and try to think of these activities in more abstract terms. What parts of it make you flow? Is there a way to incorporate some of these experiences into the next place you go?
